X-Men: The last stand

The X-men series, based on the Marvel comics, is right up my alley, and the poster for the third episode from 2006 is really excellent, using the Wolverine claws to denote the number 3.

Riverside

One of my main music discoveries of recent years is Danish singer/song writer Agnes Obel. Her excellent taste is also reflected in the cover designs, as shown in this case for the single Riverside. Simple, beautiful, haunting. More about Agnes Obel on the linked Wikipedia page.

Maribaja

June 2013 marked the 40th anniversary of me being interested in the Dutch Top40 as broadcast weekly at that time by Veronica. To celebrate this piece of my youth, I intend to make Saturday Top40 1973 day in this blog for the rest of the year - providing a link to the list of that day 40 years ago and selecting my favourite song of the new entries of that week. Today we feature the list of 29 September 1973. Three new entries that week are featured on our car's USB MP3 stick. In the end I picked the internationally least known one, over the songs by the Sweet and Suzi Quatro. The Cats from the Dutch village of Volendam scored another top10 hit with Maribaja, one of their finest efforts. Art Rock score: 8/10 (great song, I'd put it on my MP3 player).

Spring in Shanghai

Once more one of my recent attempts at digital art based on my own photographs, created with the free software SuperPhoto that came with my new laptop. This is a photograph taken in Shanghai a few years ago, given a painting like treatment. The link leads to the original photograph.

Tuscan minimalism

Given the general extremely high quality of his photographs, my Flickr friend Philipp Klinger has been absent from this blog far too long. Partially this was due to his own break from Flickr, partially due to the fact that I had put the Flickr Favourites theme on hold for a while. Anyway, here he is with a perfect minimal composition of the Tuscan landscape - with a sensual twist. As usual, all rights retained by the creator.

Summer (the first time)

June 2013 marked the 40th anniversary of me being interested in the Dutch Top40 as broadcast weekly at that time by Veronica. To celebrate this piece of my youth, I intend to make Saturday Top40 1973 day in this blog for the rest of the year - providing a link to the list of that day 40 years ago and selecting my favourite song of the new entries of that week. Today we feature the list of 22 September 1973. Although it has featured before in my blog, I had to choose that beautiful summer ballad by Bobby Goldsboro as my pick of the week. Art Rock score: 9/10 (excellent song, one of the 600 best of all time).

300 Days at sea

The eighth studio album by Bermudan singer/song writer Heather Nova from 2011 is based on a good, if somewhat baffling photograph of her with a dog in a small boat. What makes the cover memorable though is the excellent choice of calligraphy for the title, suggesting water reflections. The photography is by Sacha Blackburne, the calligraphy and cover design by Dirk Rudolph.

Six sunflowers

One of the drawbacks of conventional art like paintings is that it can get destroyed - sometimes without even a decent photograph remaining. Such was the fate of van Gogh's Six sunflowers, painted in 1888 and destroyed in Japan in 1945 in a fire after a bombing raid on Osaka. As a recent BBC article revealed, a good photograph of this masterpiece has now been found in the museum's archives. Particularly striking is the combination with the orange frame, selected by the artist himself. More about van Gogh in the Wikipedia article linked to below.

Let's spend the night together

June 2013 marked the 40th anniversary of me being interested in the Dutch Top40 as broadcast weekly at that time by Veronica. To celebrate this piece of my youth, I intend to make Saturday Top40 1973 day in this blog for the rest of the year - providing a link to the list of that day 40 years ago and selecting my favourite song of the new entries of that week. Today we feature the list of 15 September 1973. A number of good MP3 player worthy songs to choose from, including Barry White and Jimmy Helms, but my pick of the week is Bowie's excellent cover of a famous Stones song - not released as a single in the UK, but a hit in Holland. Art Rock score: 8/10 (great song, I would put it on my MP3 player).

Owl butterfly (Bananenfalter)

It's been a while since my Flickr friend knips2007(Rainer) last featured in this blog - and curiously that was with a butterfly shot as well. I love the colours and softness in this one, generating an almost abstract feeling rather than a straightforward nature shot. Beautiful. As usual, all rights retained by the creator.

Czesky Krumlov

Once more one of my recent attempts at digital art based on my own photographs, created with the free software SuperPhoto that came with my new laptop. This is a photograph taken in the Czech city of Czesky Krumlov, given a painting like treatment. One of my favourites so far. The link leads to the original photograph.

Blue is the warmest colour

This recent French movie (original title La vie d'Adele), written, produced, and directed by Abdellatif Kechiche, won the Palme d'Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Its story of a lesbian couple with explicit love scenes has been deemed controversial in some circles, but the poster is fantastic. It makes the utmost of the beauty of one of the lead actresses (Lea Seydoux) with an excellent choice of font.

Easy livin'

June 2013 marked the 40th anniversary of me being interested in the Dutch Top40 as broadcast weekly at that time by Veronica. To celebrate this piece of my youth, I intend to make Saturday Top40 1973 day in this blog for the rest of the year - providing a link to the list of that day 40 years ago and selecting my favourite song of the new entries of that week. Today we feature the list of 8 September 1973. Last week, the new entries were mediocre or worse, this week I had to pick between two of my all-time favourite songs. In the end, as much as I love the Stones' ballad Angie, I love Uriah Heep's Easy livin' even more. Art Rock score: 10/10 (one of 200 best songs of all time).

Revealing

The subject of "Flickr favourites" has been put on hold since May, mainly because I wanted to make a decision whether to stay on the Flickr site myself or switch to Ipernity, like some of my Flickr friends. I have finally made up my mind to stay, and as a result I will be showing more of the beautiful images others are posting there. And what better way to re-start than with another marvelous shimmering colourful abstraction by my Flickr friend sannesu. As usual, all rights retained by the creator.

Brand new me

This cover of the Alicia Keys 2012 single Brand new me is simple, yet beautiful. It makes optimum use of her good looks, but it is well composed too, and the use of her excellent AK symbol is very cleverly integrated in the dress. More about Alicia Keys on the linked Wikipedia page.
